Rwanda's Birth Registration Digitization Enhances Public Infrastructure
Rwanda has made significant strides in digitizing its birth registration system, integrating it with the national ID system to enable real-time identity verification and data sharing across various sectors. This initiative, supported by Vital Strategies since 2016, has transformed the civil registration and vital statistics (CRVS) system from a centralized, paper-based process to a decentralized, digital one with numerous registration points. The digitization has improved service access, efficiency, and trust, and has provided higher quality data for policymaking. The system now connects with hospitals, government agencies, and businesses, supporting access to around 200 essential services. Similar efforts in Thailand have also shown success, with the country achieving near-universal civil registration and linking it to a unique personal identification number.
