Venice Faces Long-term Sea-Level Rise Challenges
Venice is grappling with the challenges posed by long-term sea-level rise (SLR), as detailed in a recent study published in Scientific Reports by Nature. The study explores various adaptation strategies for Venice and its lagoon, including closed lagoon and ring-diking approaches. The closed lagoon strategy would maintain current water levels, while ring-diking would allow water levels to rise with SLR, necessitating higher embankments. The study also highlights the increasing intensity of heavy rainfall in northern Italy, which could exacerbate flooding risks. To mitigate these risks, the installation of pumping systems is recommended, with a current capacity requirement of 1,000 m³/s, potentially increasing to 1,200 m³/s by the century's end under high-emission scenarios.
