Common Sense Media Launches Youth AI Safety Institute to Address Risks for Children
Common Sense Media, a nonprofit media watchdog, has announced the launch of the Youth AI Safety Institute, an independent research and testing lab aimed at studying the risks AI tools may pose to children and teens. The institute will provide information to parents and families about various AI tools and set safety benchmarks for tech firms. This initiative comes in response to the rapid development of AI models, where speed often takes precedence over safety testing. The institute will 'red team' leading AI models and products used by young people to identify potential risks or shortcomings in safety guardrails. The research will be published as consumer-friendly guides, and AI youth safety standards will be developed to help tech companies improve their products.
