Buckingham Fountain: A Historical Landmark in Chicago's Urban Landscape
The Clarence Buckingham Memorial Fountain, a significant historical landmark in Chicago, was opened in 1927. Designed by architect Edward Bennet and featuring sculptures by French artist Marcel Loyau, the fountain is one of the largest in the world. It was donated by Kate Buckingham in memory of her brother, Clarence, with a trust fund established to cover maintenance costs. The fountain's design was inspired by the Latona Basin at Versailles, and it features 134 jets that circulate over 14,000 gallons of water per minute. The fountain underwent a major restoration in 1994, funded by the trust, ensuring its preservation as a cultural and architectural icon.
