EU Suspends Brazilian Meat Imports Over Antibiotic Compliance Concerns
The European Union has suspended imports of Brazilian meat and other animal products, including poultry, eggs, and honey, effective immediately. This decision stems from Brazil's failure to provide sufficient guarantees that its exports meet stringent EU standards regarding the misuse of antibiotics in livestock farming. The European Commission stated that Brazil will no longer be authorized to export food-producing animals and products of animal origin intended for human consumption to the EU. Brazil was placed on an EU list of countries not adhering to antibiotic use rules in May. This suspension follows strong criticism from European farmers and France regarding the free trade agreement signed in January 2026 between the EU and South America's Mercosur bloc, which includes Brazil. Brazil was the EU's second-largest beef supplier in 2025, exporting over 92,000 tonnes worth more than 713 million euros.
