Utah 4-H Communities Rally to Support Children with Serious Illnesses Through Livestock Auctions
Utah 4-H communities demonstrated significant generosity by rallying around young members facing serious health challenges during two junior livestock auctions. In Weber County, nine-year-old Brandon “Chomp” Barela, who was hospitalized with heart failure before his first livestock show, received over $41,000 from buyers for his goat, Santa. His best friend, Tyttan Sappington, stepped in to show Santa, allowing the goat to qualify for auction. The buyers then returned Santa to Chomp’s family. Similarly, in Salt Lake County, approximately $15,000 was raised for another young 4-H member battling a rare form of cancer through the sale of his lamb. These acts of kindness were not formal requests but spontaneous community responses to the children's circumstances, highlighting the strong bonds within the 4-H program and local communities.
