Wildfires in Spokane, Washington Destroy Hundreds of Structures and Force Mass Evacuations
Wildfires in Spokane, Washington, have caused widespread destruction, burning over 700 structures and forcing approximately 67,000 residents to evacuate as of August 3, 2026. The fires, which began over the weekend, have consumed about 12.5 square miles (32 square kilometers) of land, leaving many homes and properties in ruins. Authorities have arrested a 37-year-old man suspected of starting one of the fires, known as the Old Trails Fire. The situation has been exacerbated by dry conditions and high winds, although calmer weather has temporarily aided firefighting efforts. Over 1,000 firefighters are currently battling the blazes, with reinforcements expected to arrive in the coming days. The fires remain uncontained, and the region is grappling with severe drought and a lack of snowpack, which have contributed to the rapid spread of the flames.
