Harvard Business School Publishes Case Study on Northeastern University's Transformation
Harvard Business School (HBS) has released an extensive case study detailing the 20-year transformation of Northeastern University. The study highlights Northeastern's evolution from a regional institution, which admitted half of its applicants, into one of the most selective universities globally. This shift has significantly elevated its profile and impact. The HBS case method, known for using real-world business scenarios to train decision-makers, focused on Northeastern as a model of success. President Joseph E. Aoun, who joined Northeastern in 2006, is credited with leading this transformation by introducing the university to the global stage, expanding its network of campuses worldwide, and emphasizing experiential learning through co-op programs. The university's external research funding increased from $48.7 million to nearly $300 million by 2023-2024, a 500% increase since 2006, and it achieved R1 status, the highest rating for universities, in 2016.
