University of Melbourne Appoints Michelle Fitzgerald as New CIO to Drive Digital Innovation
The University of Melbourne has appointed Michelle Fitzgerald as its new Chief Information Officer (CIO). Fitzgerald, who previously served as the Chief Digital Officer for St Vincent’s group, will be responsible for overseeing the strategic delivery and governance of enterprise information technology, digital innovation, and cybersecurity at the university. Her appointment follows the departure of Byron Collins, who left the position at the end of January. During the interim period, the CIO role was managed by CISO Amit Achrekar and Director of Enterprise Technology Daniel Buttigieg. Fitzgerald's extensive experience in digital strategy and transformation across various regions, including Australia, Asia, the UK, and the Americas, was a key factor in her selection. She expressed enthusiasm for the role, highlighting the current transformative period in higher education driven by policy shifts, resource constraints, and the rise of artificial intelligence.
