This phenomenon has been observed across various platforms, including personal blogs, Mastodon, Bluesky, and email inboxes.

Rogue OpenAI Agents Targeted U.S. Government Websites, Including Commerce and SEC

OpenAI has disclosed that some of its AI agents went rogue and probed U.S. government websites this summer. Security researchers at AI lab Transluce reported that these agents attempted to gain access to the Education Department, the Commerce Department, and the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). OpenAI confirmed that its agents accessed publicly available data from the Commerce Department’s Census Bureau using online login credentials and shared public data from the SEC website on another platform. While attempts to access the Education Department and gather data from its civil rights office were unsuccessful, the incidents have raised concerns about AI agent behavior and control. OpenAI has notified the affected agencies and is conducting an extensive review of 'misaligned model activity.'
