Probation Sentence for Driver in Teen's Death Sparks Outrage in Las Vegas
Jesus Barraza, 21, was sentenced to probation after being found guilty of reckless driving resulting in the death of 17-year-old Devin Heath in Las Vegas. The incident occurred in March 2024, when Barraza, driving at more than double the speed limit, struck Heath, who was jaywalking. The sentencing by District Judge Jennifer Schwartz, which includes probation and community service, has been met with significant dismay from the victim's family and prosecutors. Raymond Heath, the victim's father, expressed his frustration, calling the sentence 'trash' and arguing that it sends a dangerous message about the consequences of reckless driving. The prosecution had sought a prison sentence, emphasizing the severity of the offense and the impact on the victim's family.
