Lexington-Fayette Urban County Planning Commission Considers Data Center Regulation Amid Development Concerns
The Lexington-Fayette Urban County Planning Commission is set to hold a public hearing to discuss proposed zoning ordinance text amendments concerning data center development in Fayette County. The meeting, scheduled for July 30, will address the classification and regulation of data centers, distinguishing between major and minor facilities. Major data centers, defined as those over 50,000 square feet with electrical substations, would be banned under the new regulations. Minor data centers, under 50,000 square feet, would be permitted only in specific industrial areas, subject to conditional use permits and various environmental assessments. This move follows a moratorium on data center development passed by the Urban County Council in June, prompted by potential developments at the former Lexmark site.
