Researchers Develop Seaweed Origami-Inspired Aquaculture System for Carbon Sequestration
Researchers from Zhejiang University, in collaboration with Guizhou University and the Ningbo Innovation Center, have developed a novel Seaweed Origami-inspired Aquaculture System (Seaweed OAS). This system aims to facilitate open-ocean seaweed cultivation for various purposes, including carbon sequestration. The Seaweed OAS is constructed from 12 variant pentagonal units assembled into a dodecahedron-like shell. Each module integrates an origami-inspired shell, an internal nutrient space, a central buoyancy ball, and connection seats. The design, inspired by the traditional Chinese huiwen (fret) pattern, allows for the creation of quiet microhabitats where seaweed can attach and grow, while simultaneously storing slow-release nutrients. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD), laboratory tests, lake trials, and an open-ocean trial in the Philippine Trench region were conducted to evaluate the system's flow regulation, stability, and global deployment potential. The study, published in Environmental Science and...
