Democrats Press ICE on Oversight Amid Use-of-Force Concerns
Democratic members of the House Homeland Security Committee, led by Rep. Bennie Thompson, have raised concerns over the oversight of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) following a briefing on the agency's use-of-force policies. The briefing comes after two recent incidents where ICE officers shot and killed immigrants in Maine and Houston, sparking criticism of the agency's tactics. During the briefing, it was revealed that since the beginning of President Trump's administration, only one ICE officer has been referred for discipline over use-of-force incidents, despite 56 complaints being filed. Rep. Seth Magaziner expressed disbelief at the low number of disciplinary actions given the agency's size and the number of incidents. ICE officials stated that officers are trained in de-escalation tactics and take annual refresher courses on use-of-force policies. However, the agency's accountability measures remain under scrutiny.
