Western U.S. Faces Potentially Intense Wildfire Season Amid Record Snowpack Decline
The latest forecast from the National Interagency Fire Center (NIFC) indicates a potentially severe wildfire season across the Western United States. According to Boise State Public Radio, the region is experiencing record-low snowpacks, early snow melts, and high temperatures, all contributing to increased fire risks. Areas such as New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado, and Wyoming are expected to see above-average wildfire potential this month, with the situation intensifying by June. The Four Corners states and parts of the Northwest are particularly vulnerable, marked by higher-than-normal fire potential. Over 1.6 million acres have already burned, driven by grassfires in the Plains states, signaling an early start to the fire season.
