California State Prison Implements Book Club to Foster Community and Rehabilitation
California State Prison, Sacramento, a Level IV maximum-security institution, has established a book club called 'Leaders and Readers' to provide a safe space for incarcerated individuals. Library Technical Assistant Alicia Lara initiated the club, which meets weekly, offering a platform for discussion and connection among inmates. The club encourages participants to engage in 'popcorn-style' reading, where members take turns reading chapters, followed by discussions on the story's themes and impactful moments. Lara incorporates additional activities such as vocabulary lessons, handouts, contests, and a 'cookie jar' for anonymous positive submissions to enhance engagement and learning.
