National Weather Service Predicts Imminent Glacial Outburst Flood in Juneau's Suicide Basin
The National Weather Service has forecasted that Suicide Basin, a glacial lake in Juneau, Alaska, will fill to capacity between August 8 and 12, potentially leading to a glacial outburst flood. This event occurs when water pressure builds up in the basin, eventually boring through the ice and causing the Mendenhall Glacier to float, releasing billions of gallons of water into the valley below. Historically, such floods begin within a week after the basin is full, but the exact timing can vary. The City and Borough of Juneau have advised residents in the Mendenhall Valley flood zone to evacuate once the basin starts to release water. The Weather Service will provide forecasts on the flood's size and peak timing, adjusting predictions as more data becomes available.
