Ransomware Attacks on Universities Surge, Highlighting Cybersecurity Challenges
Ransomware attacks targeting universities have increased significantly, with a report from Comparitech indicating an 8% rise in such incidents in the first half of 2026 compared to the previous six months. The report highlights the activities of The Gentlemen ransomware group, which has intensified its focus on higher education institutions, accounting for a substantial portion of the attacks. The median ransom demand in these cases has risen to $420,620, marking a 53% increase from the previous period. The United States has been the most affected, with 34 confirmed ransomware incidents in its educational sector. The report underscores the severe impact of these attacks, including data theft and system disruptions, as exemplified by a $1.9 million ransom demand following an attack on Mount Royal University in Canada.
