Albuquerque Police Department's 'Adopt a Business' Program Enhances Community Safety
The Albuquerque Police Department (APD) has implemented a pilot program called "Adopt a Business," which pairs officer liaisons with local businesses to foster stronger relationships and improve community safety. The program provides business owners with a direct line of contact to law enforcement for non-emergency issues, allowing them to report concerns, ask questions, and receive crime prevention tips. Martha Plummer, owner of Happy Cat Hotel and Spa Albuquerque, reported a significant reduction in issues like homeless encampments and domestic violence incidents outside her business since joining the program. Commander Amy Sedler, who based the initiative on a previous neighborhood block patrol program, stated that the program has expanded to include 133 businesses across Albuquerque, with plans for further growth. Businesses participate for one year, with extensions based on officer availability and crime rates in the area.
