Texas Man Faces Jail Time for Shooting Protected Bald Eagle
Santos Guerrero, a 42-year-old Texas resident, faces up to a year in federal prison and a $100,000 fine for shooting a bald eagle, a protected species, that landed on his property. The incident occurred in October 2024 and was captured on video, which showed the eagle being shot and falling to the ground. Despite being rushed to an animal hospital, the eagle had to be euthanized due to severe injuries, including a damaged wing, liver fractures, and internal bleeding. Guerrero admitted to the shooting as part of a guilty plea, although his motive remains unclear. The case is being prosecuted under the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act.
