Fort Myers Expands Affordable Housing Options Amid Rising Costs
Fort Myers is addressing its affordable housing shortage through a multi-faceted approach involving city-led programs, public housing initiatives, nonprofit efforts, and private development. The city has implemented an Affordable Housing Trust Fund to assist residents earning up to 120% of the area median income, providing rental subsidies to stabilize those at risk of displacement. Additionally, the city participates in developing homes sold at cost to income-qualified buyers, reducing price barriers and promoting homeownership. The Housing Authority of the City of Fort Myers manages over 1,300 housing units and administers more than 2,500 housing vouchers, while nonprofit organizations like Habitat for Humanity focus on affordable homeownership. Private developers are also constructing apartment communities for moderate-income workers, utilizing incentives such as tax credits and zoning allowances.
