ESCRT-III Proteins Found to Protect DNA Bridges During Cell Division, Offering Insights into Genome Stability
Researchers from King's College London, in collaboration with the University of Utah and Altos Labs, have discovered a new role for ESCRT-III proteins in protecting DNA bridges during cell division. DNA bridges are thin strands of DNA that can form when chromosomes do not fully separate during cell division. These structures are vulnerable to damage, which can lead to genome instability. The study, published in Nature Structural & Molecular Biology, reveals that ESCRT-III proteins, known for their role in membrane reshaping and repair, also form a protective coating around DNA bridges, preventing damage. This discovery was made using advanced microscopy techniques and specialized cell lines, allowing researchers to observe the proteins' behavior in real-time.
