IMO Strengthens Maritime Security in Africa During EU Maritime Security Week
The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has reaffirmed its commitment to enhancing maritime security across the Red Sea, East Africa, Southern Africa, and the Western Indian Ocean regions. This announcement was made during the EU Regional Maritime Security Week held in Nairobi, Kenya, from December 2 to 5, 2025. The event, hosted by the Government of Kenya with support from the European Union, brought together 112 delegates from 16 countries and 12 regional and international organizations. Key discussions focused on the progress of EU-funded initiatives like the Red Sea, Safe Seas Africa, and Port Security and Safety of Navigation programs. These initiatives have led to significant achievements, including the seizure of 2.4 tonnes of drugs, the arrest of 36 human traffickers, and the rescue of multiple fishermen and sailors in distress.
