Global Heatwaves: Rising Risks and Health Impacts
Heatwaves are becoming increasingly frequent, intense, and prolonged due to climate change, posing significant health risks worldwide. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), heat stress is a leading cause of weather-related deaths, exacerbating conditions such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and asthma. Vulnerable populations, including the elderly, outdoor workers, and those in low-quality housing, are particularly at risk. Studies show that heat-related mortality among individuals over 65 years of age increased by approximately 85% between 2000–2004 and 2017–2021. In Europe alone, the summer of 2022 saw an estimated 61,672 heat-related excess deaths. Heatwaves also disrupt essential services, including healthcare and transportation, and reduce labor productivity. WHO emphasizes that the health impacts of heat are predictable and preventable through public health policies, climate action, and preparedness measures.
