Douglas County Sheriff's Office Issues Warning as Drownings Increase
The Douglas County Sheriff's Office has reported an unusually high number of water-related deaths this summer, with five drownings occurring so far. The most recent incident took place along the North Umpqua River. These drownings have occurred in various locations, including the North and South Umpqua River, Diamond Lake, and the coast. The Sheriff's Office is urging the community to exercise caution when engaging in water activities. Undersheriff Brad O'Dell emphasized the changing conditions of water bodies, such as obstacles, water movement, and depth, which can transform a previously safe area into a dangerous one. The office also highlighted that drowning is often a silent event, underscoring the importance of vigilance and the use of Coast Guard-approved flotation devices.
