Rep. Massie Initiates Impeachment Effort Against Secretary of Defense Hegseth, House Speaker Johnson Postpones Vote
Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) has launched an effort to impeach Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, presenting eight specific articles of impeachment. These articles accuse Hegseth of illegally using U.S. forces for unauthorized hostilities in Iran, Venezuela, and Yemen, contravening the War Powers Resolution of 1973, ordering extrajudicial killings, ignoring civilian casualty minimization, and retaliating against Sen. Mark Kelly (D-AZ). Following Massie's move, which included a 48-hour timer for a vote, House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) abruptly canceled the last day of the House session, effectively postponing consideration of the impeachment until after the midterms. Johnson's action, which Massie dubbed 'the Hegseth holiday,' is seen as an attempt to avoid a politically embarrassing vote for both the Speaker and the White House, especially given that polling suggests a majority of Americans support Hegseth's impeachment.
