Moderna and Merck's Personalized mRNA Vaccine Shows Significant Promise Against Melanoma in Phase 3 Trial
Moderna and Merck announced that their personalized mRNA cancer vaccine, intismeran autogene, successfully met its primary endpoints in a Phase 3 trial for high-risk melanoma. This marks the first time a personalized mRNA cancer therapy has reached this stage of success. The vaccine is custom-built from a sample of a patient's own tumor, designed to train the immune system to recognize specific mutations unique to that individual's cancer. In the trial, patients with high-risk melanoma who had undergone surgical removal of their tumors received either the vaccine in combination with Merck’s immunotherapy Keytruda, or Keytruda alone. The results showed that patients receiving the combination therapy experienced a longer period without cancer recurrence or spread, demonstrating statistically significant and clinically meaningful improvements.
