Study Links Childhood Adversity to Increased Risk of Gestational Diabetes
Recent research has identified a connection between childhood adversity and an increased risk of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). The study utilized data from the DANish LIFE course cohort, which includes all children born in Denmark from 1980 onwards. Researchers focused on women who gave birth for the first time between 2004 and 2018, excluding those with pre-existing diabetes. The study found that childhood adversities, categorized into dimensions such as family dynamics, material deprivation, and loss or threat of loss, are associated with higher rates of GDM. The research also examined the mediating effects of body mass index (BMI) and depression, suggesting that these factors may play a role in the increased risk of GDM among women who experienced childhood adversity.
