Black Feminist Network Challenges Philanthropy's Retrenchment Amid Global Crises
The Black Feminists in Philanthropy (BFiP) network is actively addressing the underfunding of Black feminist movements by mobilizing resources and strategizing for change. The network, comprising over 350 Black women and gender-expansive individuals, is responding to the global retrenchment in human rights funding, which saw a 29% reduction in 2025. This reduction comes amid increasing wealth accumulation and a shift in resources towards militarization. BFiP has directed nearly $2.5 million to Black feminist groups in countries like Sudan, Lebanon, and Brazil, focusing on crisis response and advocacy for racial and gender justice. The network aims to challenge the traditional philanthropic model, which often fails to support movements effectively, by promoting community-centered practices and redefining risk.
