U.S. Representatives Introduce Legislation to Expand Fentanyl Response Resources for Law Enforcement
U.S. Rep. Tom Kean Jr., R-N.J., along with U.S. Reps. Jeff Van Drew, R-N.J., Andrew Garbarino, R-N.Y., and Mike Lawler, R-N.Y., have introduced the Fight Against Fentanyl Act. This legislation aims to amend the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (Byrne JAG) program. The proposed change would allow state and local law enforcement agencies to utilize federal funding from the Byrne JAG program to acquire fentanyl testing kits and opioid reversal agents. The Byrne JAG program currently provides federal funding to state and local law enforcement jurisdictions. According to Congressman Kean, access to these tools is crucial for preventing overdoses and deaths, emphasizing the need to equip first responders in combating the fentanyl epidemic.
