Buffalo Voters to Decide on Selling City Water System to Iowa American Water
The city of Buffalo, Iowa, has reached an agreement to potentially sell its water and sewer system to Iowa American Water. This decision, however, rests with the city's voters, who will participate in a utility referendum. The current water system in Buffalo has been a source of concern for residents due to issues such as PFAs, hard water, and unusual discoloration, prompting city leaders to seek improvements. Iowa American Water, which already serves ten other communities in Iowa, has presented a proposal to address these challenges. Brad Nilesen, president of Iowa American Water, stated that the company's expertise and capital investment capabilities could help Buffalo solve its water and wastewater problems, aiming to increase reliability and improve water quality. The city plans to host informational meetings to educate residents before the vote, though specific dates have not yet been released. If approved, the transition to Iowa American Water would occur between mid-to-late 2027 or early 2028.
