Scientists Pinpoint Date of Historic Mount Rainier Mudflow
Researchers have successfully dated the Electron Mudflow, a significant lahar from Mount Rainier, to the summer of 1507. This discovery sheds light on the volcano's geological history and its potential threats. Mount Rainier, located about 60 miles from Seattle, is an active volcano with a history of lahars—volcanic mudflows that can devastate surrounding areas. The Electron Mudflow, named after the nearby hamlet of Electron, Washington, buried valleys near Orting, WA, centuries ago. Scientists used tree ring analysis from buried Douglas firs to pinpoint the exact season and year of the event. This methodology could help date other geological phenomena in the Pacific Northwest, such as landslides and earthquakes. The findings emphasize Mount Rainier's vulnerability due to its snow, ice, and unstable volcanic rock, which make lahars inevitable over geological timeframes.
