Severe Weather Disrupts Maritime Operations in Europe and North America
Hapag-Lloyd, one of the world's largest container shipping companies, reported significant operational disruptions during the first quarter of 2026 due to severe weather conditions in Europe and North America. These disruptions affected terminal operations and supply chains, contributing to a challenging quarter for the company. Additionally, geopolitical tensions, including a blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, further complicated operations, with several vessels stuck in the Persian Gulf. Despite these challenges, the company maintained stable shipping volumes of approximately 3.2 million TEU, comparable to the previous year. The Gemini network, a partnership with Maersk, demonstrated resilience under these difficult conditions, ensuring reliable service. Hapag-Lloyd also noted that a weaker U.S. dollar helped reduce costs by six percent, though adjusted costs would have risen by 4.6 percent.
