Rockfall Risk Mitigation Underway in Waimea Bay, Hawaii
In Waimea Bay, Oʻahu, Hawaii, efforts are underway to mitigate the risk of rockfalls following a recent incident where two large boulders descended onto Kamehameha Highway. The Hawaii Department of Transportation, led by Director Ed Sniffen, is spearheading the project, which is estimated to cost upwards of $20 million. The rockfall was likely triggered by heavy rains, which destabilized the hillside, posing a continued threat of further rockslides. Crews have been actively working to clear loose boulders from the slopes, with approximately 16 additional boulders identified as potential hazards. The project is being treated as an emergency to ensure the safety of motorists and to prevent future incidents.
