Senate Advances Bill to Enhance Security and Emergency Response in Federal Facilities
The U.S. Senate has passed S-2542, a bill requiring the Federal Protective Service and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to issue comprehensive guidance for emergency communication and response to violent threats or incidents in and around federal facilities. This legislation mandates the development of best practices and protocols to timely inform building tenants about various threats, including firearm events, other weapons threats, potential terrorism, and suspicious devices. The guidance will also include instructions for safety practices in response to such threats. This move comes in response to reports, including one from the GSA inspector general, which found over 11,000 crimes, ranging from vandalism to homicide, occurred in or around GSA-owned federal buildings over the past four years.
