Greek Authorities Report Tragic Migrant Boat Capsizing Near Crete, Resulting in 18 Deaths
Greek authorities have reported a tragic incident involving the capsizing of an inflatable boat carrying migrants in the Mediterranean Sea, south of the island of Crete. At least 18 migrants have died in this incident, with two survivors rescued by a passing Turkish merchant vessel. The boat was discovered half-sunken, prompting a rescue operation involving a ship and a plane from the European border agency Frontex, a Greek Coast Guard helicopter, and three merchant vessels. This incident highlights the ongoing perilous journeys undertaken by migrants attempting to reach Europe, often fleeing conflict and poverty in the Middle East, Africa, and Asia. The route from Turkey to nearby Greek islands has been a common path, although increased patrols and alleged pushbacks have reduced crossing attempts. Recently, there has been a surge in arrivals from Libya to Crete.
