International Criminal Court Orders $8.4 Million Reparations for Mali Victims of Al Qaeda-linked Leader
The International Criminal Court (ICC) has mandated that Al Hassan Ag Abdoul Aziz Ag Mohamed Ag Mahmoud, an Al Qaeda-linked extremist leader, pay $8.4 million in reparations. Al Hassan was convicted in 2024 for crimes including torture and religious persecution during his tenure as head of the Islamic police in Timbuktu, Mali. Despite being declared financially liable, Al Hassan is indigent, and the reparations will be funded by the Trust Fund for Victims, established by the ICC's member states. This fund is tasked with supporting over 65,000 victims through socioeconomic, educational, and psychological programs, particularly targeting women and girls who were disproportionately affected.
