Two Sisters in Their 30s Suffer Cardiac Arrests, Raising Awareness for Sudden Cardiac Events
Kayla Messana and Kendra Cunningham, sisters from New Hampshire, both experienced unexpected cardiac arrests in their thirties despite leading healthy lifestyles. Messana suffered her cardiac arrest in 2022, while Cunningham experienced hers in 2026. Both sisters were diagnosed with heart failure and have since been fitted with subcutaneous implantable cardioverter-defibrillators to prevent future incidents. They have undergone extensive testing, but no genetic cause has been identified. The sisters are advocating for more research and awareness about sudden cardiac arrests, which affect over 350,000 people annually in the U.S. with a high fatality rate. They have started a podcast, 'Flatlined and Fine,' to share their experiences and educate others on the importance of CPR and defibrillator awareness.
