Babcock Faces Financial Setback Due to Type 31 Frigate Design Changes
Babcock, a leading defense contractor, has announced a significant financial charge of GBP140 million (USD187 million) related to the Type 31 Inspiration-class frigate program for the Royal Navy. This charge is attributed to design changes and re-work affecting the first two ships of the class. The financial impact was disclosed in a trading update on May 13, 2026, and adds to the company's cumulative losses on the project, which now exceed GBP300 million. The Type 31 program, awarded in 2019, involves the construction of five frigates based on the Arrowhead 140 design. The ships are being built at Babcock's new facility in Rosyth, Scotland. The cost increases are due to higher than expected levels of re-work on the first-of-class HMS Venturer, resulting from design changes and out-of-sequence build activities.
