U.S. Lawmakers Urge President Trump to Address Jimmy Lai's Imprisonment at China Summit
Ahead of President Trump's upcoming trip to China, a bipartisan group of U.S. lawmakers is pressing him to address the imprisonment of Jimmy Lai, a prominent pro-democracy figure in Hong Kong. Lai, who has been detained since 2020, is a vocal critic of the Chinese Communist Party. Over 100 lawmakers, including two-thirds of the Senate, have signed a letter urging Trump to discuss Lai's case with Chinese President Xi Jinping. The letter emphasizes the need for Lai's release on humanitarian grounds, citing his age and health. This request comes as Trump prepares for a summit in Beijing, where he is expected to tackle various issues, including trade and Taiwan. Lai's imprisonment has been a point of contention, with the U.S. government labeling the charges against him as politically motivated.
