Iowa Mother Undergoes Historic Quadruple Organ Transplant, Returns Home
Elizabeth Wehrle, a mother from Montezuma, Iowa, has become the first known person to undergo a quadruple organ transplant involving re-transplanted lungs. The surgery, performed at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago, included the replacement of her lungs, liver, and kidney. Wehrle, who has lived with cystic fibrosis since age 11, faced a severe health decline earlier this year, leading to the historic surgery. After spending four months in Chicago for recovery, she has returned home to Iowa. Wehrle expressed gratitude for the organ donors and the medical teams that made her recovery possible. A benefit event is scheduled to assist with her medical expenses.
