BBC Announces Major Workforce Reductions Amid Financial Strain
The BBC is set to reduce its workforce by nearly 10%, equating to between 1,800 and 2,000 job cuts, in response to significant financial pressures. This move marks the broadcaster's largest scaling back in 15 years. Interim director-general Rhodri Talfan Davies informed staff of the impending redundancies during an all-staff meeting. The decision comes as the BBC aims to save £500 million ($678 million) over the next two years. Factors contributing to the financial strain include high production inflation, pressure on license fee and commercial income, and a turbulent global economy. Davies indicated that the cost-cutting measures might also involve tighter controls on spending in areas such as recruitment, travel, and attendance at events.
