NPT Review Conference Highlights Diplomatic Path to Address Iran's Nuclear Ambitions
As tensions rise in the Middle East, concerns about Iran potentially developing nuclear weapons are intensifying. The upcoming Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) Review Conference at the United Nations in New York is seen as pivotal in addressing these concerns. The NPT, which governs the global nuclear order, is based on a grand bargain where non-nuclear states agree not to develop nuclear weapons in exchange for nuclear states working towards disarmament. The article argues that war is not a viable solution to Iran's nuclear threat. Instead, it suggests that a strengthened legal framework, enhanced verification, and diplomacy are necessary to prevent nuclear proliferation. The article proposes a more robust inspection regime similar to the Chemical Weapons Convention, which could be applied universally, including to Iran, to ensure compliance with the NPT.
