Ubuntu on WSL for Windows 11 Outpacing Native Desktop Growth, Canonical VP Reports
Canonical's VP of Engineering, Jon Seagar, has reported that the growth of Ubuntu usage within the Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) on Windows 11 is now significantly outpacing the growth of native Ubuntu desktop usage. Seagar anticipates that in the coming months, there will be more Ubuntu WSL users than 'native' Ubuntu users. This trend indicates a substantial shift in how users, particularly developers and system administrators, are interacting with the Linux distribution. WSL allows users to run Linux environments directly on Windows without the need for virtual machines or dual-booting, offering seamless integration with the Windows 11 file system and tools like Microsoft's VS Code.
