Boyle Heights Warehouse Fire Sparks Health Concerns Over Fly-Borne Disease Risk
A recent fire at the Lineage Facility in Boyle Heights, Los Angeles, has led to significant health concerns due to the potential spread of a fly-borne disease. The fire left millions of pounds of meat to rot, creating an ideal breeding ground for green bottle flies. These flies are known to cause myiasis, a disease that occurs when they lay eggs in open wounds of humans or animals. The situation has become so severe that residents are staying indoors to avoid the flies. The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health has received over 900 complaints about the odors and pest infestation. In response, Lineage has implemented pest control measures, including distributing fly traps to the community. However, local officials, including LA City Councilmember Ysabel Jurado, argue that these measures are insufficient until the waste is fully removed.
