Flooding in Brunswick, GA Raises Concerns Over Toxic Contamination
Residents of Brunswick, Georgia, are facing recurring flooding issues, exacerbated by proximity to a former pesticide plant now designated as a toxic Superfund site by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Semona Holmes, a local resident, has experienced floodwaters reaching knee-high levels, with her neighborhood turning into a river during heavy rains or high tides. The floodwaters are feared to carry contaminants from the nearby industrial site, raising health concerns. To address these issues, a $15 million research initiative funded by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences will establish Georgia's first Superfund research center. Scientists from six institutions, including Emory University and Georgia Tech, will study the health impacts of past chemical exposures and assess future risks, particularly in light of climate change and extreme weather events. The research aims to provide clarity on the environmental and health risks faced by the community.
