Global Dietary Shift Could Drastically Reduce Farm Emissions by 2050
A study by the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine and Cornell University suggests that adopting a healthier global diet could significantly reduce agricultural emissions. The proposed diet, aligned with the EAT-Lancet Commission's recommendations, emphasizes increased consumption of legumes, fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and nuts, while reducing red meat and ultra-processed foods. This shift could lead to an 85% reduction in emissions from land-use changes and a 6% decrease in global farmland use by 2050. The impact would vary by region, with the U.S. and Europe seeing substantial declines in livestock production, while India's agricultural production could increase due to a rise in crop production.
