CDC Funding Cuts Impact Aliveness Project's HIV Prevention Efforts in Minneapolis
The Aliveness Project, a nonprofit organization based in south Minneapolis, is facing a significant financial setback as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has decided not to renew a crucial community grant program. This decision results in the loss of approximately $450,000 annually, which has been instrumental in supporting the organization's HIV testing, prevention, and support services for nearly four decades. The funding previously enabled the Aliveness Project to conduct over 6,000 HIV tests, leading to 56 positive diagnoses, and facilitated the connection of more than 96% of those diagnosed to medical care within 30 days. The organization has been pivotal in reaching vulnerable populations through mobile outreach and community events, providing services to those who might not have regular access to healthcare.
