UC Berkeley Researchers Identify Ghost Ancestors in Human DNA, Impacting Understanding of Human Evolution
Researchers at the University of California, Berkeley, have discovered traces of DNA from two previously unknown human ancestors in the genomes of modern humans. These 'ghost ancestors' are believed to have interbred with early Homo sapiens over 50,000 years ago. The study, which utilized a new method to analyze present-day human genomes, identified specific regions of DNA that originated from these unidentified ancestors. One of these groups interbred with modern humans in Africa, contributing approximately 1% of the modern human genome. The second group, referred to as a 'super-archaic ancestor,' is thought to have interbred with Denisovans in Eurasia over 200,000 years ago, with some of this DNA eventually entering the modern human genome.
