Severe Drought Conditions Persist Across Florida in April 2026
Florida, typically one of the wettest states in the U.S., is experiencing significant drought conditions. According to NASA's Earth Observatory, nearly all of Florida is under at least 'moderate' drought, with about 80% facing 'extreme' drought as of April 2026. The drought has intensified since January 2026, following unusually dry conditions throughout 2025. Data from the GRACE-FO satellites, a joint mission by NASA and the German Research Center for Geosciences, indicate that shallow groundwater aquifers in northern and central Florida are particularly dry. These aquifers are crucial for drinking water and agriculture. The drought has led to water use restrictions in some districts, threats to crops, and increased wildfire risks. Even the Everglades, a typically wet ecosystem, is experiencing dry conditions.
